JAVITS CENTER, NEW YORK

We are delighted to announce our first participation at The Armory Show in New York this September in collaboration with Galerie Haas, Zurich. We are happy to present new works by Austin Eddy, and Galerie Haas will show works by Sandra Vásquez de la Horra.

”Austin Eddy is always exploring new boundaries in his work, which he sets for himself. He left non-figurative painting behind because he missed a connection to life and certain rules. Everything was possible! In the motif of the bird, to which he found in the organic work process rather by chance than from a conceptual consideration, he discovered a metaphor for our existence. The bird is a recurring motif in the history of art. Artists such as Jean Arp, Constantin Brancusi, and Paul Klee created countless works for which the depiction of the bird served as a point of departure. For Paul Klee, the animal symbolized total freedom, because unlike humans, it can move completely detached from gravity. Klee recognized an “Urtragik” (Ur-tragedy) in human existence: while the body is bound to the earth by gravity, the spirit moves completely freely. The duality of our lives also preoccupies Austin Eddy in his new paintings.”
Excerpt from the exhibition text by Fabienne Eggelhöfer, chief curator Zentrum Paul Klee, Bern

Artist statement about The Armory Show presentation:
Like many things it starts with a simple scenario. A very honest grouping of events. The picture is both sad and beautiful, a collection of singular moments that are equally poignant and banal. A scenario is here to point out the very basic understanding of our own absence. Here then gone, the march of time is an unarguable and ever-present transition.
With this group of work I am trying to bring to light this transition through time. To have these works exist as musings on mortality, the eventual and inevitable end to one’s own existence. And through that understanding capture the audible silence of loss. Though conversely exploring the importance of living fully. Embracing the solidity and stillness of a moment. A reminder to hope.
There is an ever unfolding to the duality of our existence. The desire for companionship and structure is constantly at odds with a want for solitude and disorder. Like the tide, we are pulled in opposite directions through our days, weeks, years. This ebb and flow can mirror our passage through time. A reminder that this cycle never ends.
